Quorum Analytics

Startup

Quorum (www.quorum.us) is an online legislative strategy platform that provides unique quantitative insights into the U.S. Congress. Featuring interactive visualizations and up-to-date statistics for every Member, bill, vote, committee, issue area, and congressional district, Quorum is changing the way people see, explain, and influence the legislative process.

Over the summer of 2014, I helped build the platform from the ground up, serving as a full-stack developer. On the backend, I assisted with creating the database and keeping the production server running. My scripts used multiprocessing to efficiently and reliably parse data into our system and calculate statistics from it. They also cached the data for fast access from the frontend. On the frontend, I designed UI features that used these data to create an immersive experience for the user, and these features are used throughout the site.

I competed with Quorum in the MIT $100K Entrepreneurship startup competition. Out of almost 200 entering companies, we made it to the finals round of seven and received the opportunity to deliver our pitch in front of over 1000 people in MIT's Kresge auditorium.  A link to our 5-minute pitch and 2-minute Q&A is included below.

Quorum has been featured in many national news media, including in the Washington Post and The New York Times.

Working with Quorum not only developed my programming and webdev skills, but it also made me much more adept at solving technical problems. I needed to become proficient in multiple different frameworks in a very short period of time, continuously expanding and adapting my skillset to tackle the issue or feature at hand. I worked closely with the founders to assimilate what they envisioned and what the customers wanted into my design choices. Speaking to a full audience and panel of accomplished judges allowed me to develop my presentation skills at a scale I had never experienced before.
